Cabinet approves new runway at Suvarnabhumi Airport

Thailand’s cabinet has approved the construction of a third runway at New Bangkok International Airport, or Suvarnabhumi, as part of its expansion and upgrade plans for the three major airports in the Greater Bangkok area, marking another step forward in the Kingdom’s advanced infrastructure development.

Although the Cabinet gave the go-ahead for the new runway, that approval is conditional on the project passing an environmental and health impact assessment from the National Environment Board, according to Werachon Sukondhapatipa, the deputy government spokesperson.

The Japan Foundation in collaboration with TCDC Bangkok will organise the “Japanese Design Today 100”

The Japan Foundation in collaboration with TCDC Bangkok will organise the “Japanese Design Today 100” exhibition and featuring 100 Japanese design items from products used in daily life dating back from the post-war period in the 1950s until after 2010. The exhibition will be held from 24 April – 26 May 2019 and is open to the public for free at TCDC Bangkok Gallery, Chareon Krung Road.

The railway service linking Thailand and Cambodia is scheduled to be launched on 22 April 2019

The railway service linking Thailand and Cambodia is scheduled to be launched on 22 April 2019, in which the inauguaration ceremony will be presided over by the Cambodian and Thai prime ministers. The route, stretching over a span of 6 km., will link the border train station in Ban Khlong Luek in Aranyaprathet district of Thailand’s Sa Kaeo province with Poipet in Cambodia. The railway is planned to be expanded to cover the route between Sri Sophon city and Phnom Pehn as well.

His Majesty Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun has granted permission for the “Bike Un Ai Rak” biking marathon to be hosted on the occasion of the commencement of the “Un Ai Rak Fair”. On December 9 2018, His Majesty, along with HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha and HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, will preside over the opening ceremony of the “Un Ai Rak Fair” and lead the biking marathon caravan.

For the first time in 64 years, a Thai racer will be competing in a Formula One or F1 race. Twenty-two-year-old, Thai-British, Alexander Albon is now the 2nd F1 racer in history to compete under the Thai flag, the first being Prince Birabongse Bhanudej, who competed from 1950 - 1954.

Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok 2019

Over 25,000 runners from all around the world are set to return for the second edition of the “Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok 2019 presented by Toyota”, which is scheduled for Sunday, 3 February, 2019. Runners of all abilities can choose from four different race distances: Marathon (42.195 km.), Half-marathon (21.1 km.), Mini-marathon 10 km. and Fun Run (3.5 km.), as well as a wheelchair division (10 km.) The marathon race will start at Rajamangala Stadium, while the half-marathon and 10 km. race, including the wheelchair racers, will start near the Loha Prasat of Wat Ratchanatdaram.

11-year-old Thai drone pilot Wanraya “Milk” Wannapong won first place at the International Challenge section of the ALISPORTS WESG Hong Kong E-sports Festival 2018. The announcement was made on the Royal Aeronautic Sports Association of Thailand’s Facebook page on November 11, 2018. This came shortly after Wannapong won the title of “World Champion Women” at the 1st FAI World Drone Racing Championships 2018 in Shenzhen, China, making her the youngest drone racing champion in the world.

The “A Royal Treasure: The Javanese Batik Collection of King Chulalongkorn of Siam” Exhibition

The “A Royal Treasure: The Javanese Batik Collection of King Chulalongkorn of Siam” Exhibition is now on display at the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles. The exhibition aims to educate the public about the trips to Java undertaken by HM King Chulalongkorn the Great (King Rama V) as part of His Majesty’s efforts to develop Thailand, then known as Siam. Batik clothing from the HM King Chulalongkorn’s collection, which were all acquired by His Majesty during such trips, are now on full display for the public to see.

The National Innovation Agency (NIA), in collaboration with True Digital Park, has launched Bangkok Cyber Tech District, which aims to house more than 20,000 startups. Bangkok Cyber Tech District at True Digital Park is located on 200,000 square meters, considered the largest startup park in Southeast Asia. The district will ensure a complete platform under the concept of open innovation, which supports multinational tech companies, startups and entrepreneurs, universities, investors, and public agencies.
