The Governor of Nan Province presided over the opening ceremony of the lu-Mien New Year Festival.

The Governor of Nan Province presided over the opening ceremony of the lu-Mien New Year Festival. The Iu-Mien community welcomed the Governor with traditional gifts of tea and red-painted eggs, as well as a traditional dance performance. After the welcoming ceremony, the Governor formally commenced the 2019 Iu-Mien New Year Festival by striking a 100-year-old drum, before lighting fireworks as a symbol for good luck. The Iu-Mien people are an ethnic group that is a part of the Yao ethnicity. The Iu-Mien New Year is celebrated at around the same time as the Chinese New Year, but involves the celebration of a successful harvest, crops blessing, and paying respects to sprits and ancestors. The 2019 Iu-Mien New Year Festival in Nan Province was held from 4 – 6 February 2019.
