IMF congratulated the country on the success of the 35th ASEAN Summit and related summits

On 5 November 2019, H.E. Ms. Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), paid a courtesy call on H.E. General Prayut Chan-o-cha (Ret.), Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand and Minister of Defense, during her visit to Thailand to attend the 35th ASEAN Summit and related summits. The Prime Minister expressed his appreciation for IMF’s support to Thailand's Chairmanship of ASEAN and invited her to co-host, with the Bank of Thailand, the high level seminar entitled “Emerging Markets in the New Normal: Dealing with Rising Domestic Leverage and the International Financial Cycles”. Ms. Georgieva, meanwhile, congratulated Thailand on the success of the summits and, also expressed appreciation for Thailand and ASEAN’s role in the international stage, which has produced viable solutions for global challenges, especially the on-going discussions on sustainable development and economic cooperation in the region. The Prime Minister of Thailand reiterated that Thailand, in its capacity as ASEAN Chair, has committed to the reduction of major energy consumption, increased the use renewable energy as well as reduced CO2 combustion, waste usage and marine debris. Both sides, also appreciated the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy initiated by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, which is in line with the United Nations sustainable development goals and would help countries achieve the SDGs more effectively.
