People’s Accord for Unity and Reconciliation

Introduction

In the past, the Thai society was a strong community, where people lived as family, helping each other, adhering to local norms and traditions, and upholding religious principles as a way of life, thereby forming a peaceful society.  However, globalization and development resulted in rapid changes in the Thai society, some of which created problems.  These include corruption, varying perceptions towards democracy, unequal access to natural resources, educational and the public health systems, as well as imbalanced distribution of development that led to gaps between urban and rural societies and undue monopolization by certain capitalist groups.  As a result, Thailand could not fully realize its full potential despite having abundant resources, deep cultural roots and many other positive qualities.  Thailand has experienced deadlocks and lost the opportunity for continuous development.  It is, therefore, timely for all Thais to participate in the process of genuinely driving the country forward to solve the issues correctly and fairly that will bring about unity and reconciliation, better quality of life and peace so that the country can move forward with dignity, and prosperity on par with other civilised nations.

Common viewon unity and reconciliation

With a sense of duty and responsibility to the nation, we all hereby pledge to unite and cooperate in order to move the country forward, to overcome all obstacles in fulfillingour common goals, by committing to the framework of common view on unity and reconciliation as follows:

► All Thais shall cooperate in creating an atmosphere conducive to reconciliation for the unity of the country under the system of Constitutional Monarchy.  We shall acquire understanding of genuine democracy, exercise rights and freedom in a decent and appropriate manner, in accordance with the law.  We shall participate in popular politics, accept differences of opinions, and strengthen political institutions in order to bring about a transparent, free and fair election.  We shall accept election results that reflect the consensus ofall Thais.  Moreover, we shall cooperate in implementing the checks and balances of the state power and rely on parliamentary mechanisms in resolving problems.

►All Thais shall apply the King’s Philosophy to their daily lives, earn a living in good faith, be self-reliant, have morals and ethics, and have goodwill towards one another.  We shall cooperate in strengthening local livelihoods and economy which is linked to the free market economy.  We shall support and promote development of basic infrastructure throughout the country.  We shall focus on self-development to improve our capacity and skills at work, which will increase our income and enhance economic competitiveness.

►All Thais shall adhere to morals and ethics, to live an honest life, and not take part in or support any form of corruption and misconduct.  In addition, all should cooperate in investigating corruption at all levels to build a strong and corruption-free society.

►All Thais shall cooperate in supporting the conservation of natural resources and environment, utilize natural resources efficiently, as well as accept and have confidence in the procedures regarding the allocation of resources in an honest and fair manner.  Thai citizens shall participate in managing their local natural resources for the common good of the country.

►All Thais shall support and promote equality in the quality of life, access to public health and quality education throughout the country so as to be able to live in the society with happiness.

►All Thais shall respect, have confidence in, and adhere to the law, including supporting and promoting the judicial process for public order.

►All Thais shall express opinions and receive information from the media with due care, and take part in preventing distortion of information and dispersion of false information, which could lead to societal conflicts.

►All Thais shall realize the need to raise the standard of our society to the international level, in accordance with international agreements to which Thailand is  party.

►All Thais shall support and promoteall aspectsof national reform so that they are consistent and move in the same direction.  This shall be done by allowing all sidesto participate in every step of the process.

►All Thais shall learn, participate in, and support the process of driving the nation forward in accordance with the national strategy.

Conclusion

The unity and reconciliation mark the beginning of Thailand’s confidence building that all Thais will be able to live togetherpeacefully in the society according to the Thai way of life and long-held traditions.  The result of such unity and reconciliation will form a foundation for sustainable development and increase national strengthinallaspects, become a driving force for  national prosperity, provide opportunity for the nation to compete in international arena and promote quality of life under a society that is strong, caring, and safe, a society of inclusiveness in driving the nation forward under the national strategy of “stability, prosperity, and sustainability”.
