Mahidol University and TSDF on track to set up ‘Sustainable Leadership’ doctorate course

Acknowledging that having the right knowledge is key to effective implementation, the College of Management of Mahidol University (CMMU), in collaboration with Thailand Sustainable Development Foundation (TSDF), has established the Center for Research on Sustainable Leadership to foster the body of knowledge on Sufficiency Economy Philosophy (SEP) developed by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The Center aims to offer a Ph.D. course in Sustainable Leadership, the first one in the world, to produce researchers and experts in this field.

Mrs. Jirawan Boonperm, TSDF Executive Member, indicates that sustainable development has become the central focus of the international community following the declaration of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the United Nations. In Thailand, however, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej had been an influential figure in introducing and practicing sustainable development for many decades before through his various development initiatives based on SEP. The Center for Research on Sustainable Leadership intends to create an accumulated body of knowledge on SEP that could be applied internationally for the common good. In addition to education, the Center also aims to provide research fund and disseminate knowledge obtained through rigorous research, which includes training. Central to the mentioned body of knowledge is the concept of SEP Leadership, which Assoc. Prof. Sooksan Kantabutra of CMMU describes as a way forward for future economic conduct, and a sustainable solution to many of the world’s most serious issues.

The Ph.D. in Sustainable Leadership course will comprise different dimensions of social and business management with SEP as the guiding principle. The course is scheduled to begin in May 2018, and exceptional students will be offered scholarships, funded by the TSDF and the Royal Golden Jubilee doctorate program, with prospective applicants ranging from practitioners like businessperson and civil service executives to members of academia. In the future, the Center plans to extend its reach to include Master’s degree, which is still under development.
