“KKU Maker space” First Thai IT Innovation library at Khon Kaen University

On 20 March 2018, Assistant Professor Dr.Kittichai Triratanasirichai, President of Khon Kaen University (KKU), inaugurated “KKU Maker space” which is a collaboration project between Thailand Science Park, Division of  Research and Technology Transfer of KKU and the University Library, with support from the Ministry of Science and Technology.  The objective of the project is to provide working and learning space for students to apply technology creatively for innovation development.  It reflects the concept of a modern library being a knowledge centre for younger generation in line with “Thailand 4.0” policy, which emphasizes technology, innovation and creativity for sustainability.

“KKU Maker space” was set up as a learning space to enhance creativity for innovation in accordance with the policies of Khon Kaen University.  It provides the opportunity for participants to meet with multi-disciplinary experts such as design and software engineering.  In this connection, students have better chances to become well prepared entrepreneur.

Mr.Anupong Tita, a graduatefrom Faculty of Engineering and an entrepreneur, revealed that he uses technology service at KKU Maker space such as 3D printing machine.  The services have played an essential role in supporting his innovation, “Smart Trash”, a garbage bin which could alert the responsible staff when it gets full. He holds the patent of his innovation together with Khon Kaen University.  A private company has purchased this system for use in a village.  Therefore, KKU Maker space has generated income for the university while helping students to develop their own business and earn income.

KKU Maker space is a technology service and working space to support unlimited innovation development, comprising of the following:

  1. 3D Printing Machine, industrial grade, which is capable of large scale printing, with internal temperature control system to prevent deformation of the plastic while printing and able to reproduce with high accuracy.  The machine was built with durable and resistant materials which will allow user to produce durable products with reduced time.
  2. A pattern printer and Laser cutting machine that cuts wood and acrylic with laser.  The machine has accurate cutting system allowing students to create their work according to whatever imagination they have.
