The Development of Dairy

In the same year, 1962, barns were erected to house the latest palace compound inhabitants: cows. With his own funds, His Majesty purchased six cows for a dairy project. The herd grew and the milk found eager buyers in the adjacent neighborhood. The proceeds provided the seed money for his next project: the Suan Dusit Dairy Factory, opened on 7 December 1969. Still in operation today, it produces milk for sale in the market but, more importantly, it is a model for dairy farmers (a new industry) throughout Thailand to emulate. In addition, the factory produces calcium-rich tablets from milk stock for sale at cost to remote areas families where transporting fresh milk is difficult.
