The Introduction of the Iron “Buffalo”

 

The Chitralada Villa's grounds also boast experimental rice plots where new varieties are developed and the seed is then distributed to farmers. It was here that one of the first khwai lek (iron buffalo) was introduced to till the paddies. Today, the compact tractor has virtually replaced Thailand's traditional draft animals, water buffalo and bullocks. And, in a small facility to one side of the grounds, waste rice husks are compressed into logs which can be burned as fuel to cook meals.
