Farm Loans

 

He took it one step farther in 1964 when he inaugurated the Thai-Israel Rural Development Project in Petchaburi Province, just north of Hua Hin. With the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, he looked into the problem of farm debt. With the low return from sales of their produce, farmers were often forced to borrow money to support their families. A bad crop year could force them to sell land to pay off their debts. As a social experiment, His Majesty, with Israeli help, set up a 200-acre research site at Hup Kaphong 4,000 acres. Some 120 families were given 10 acres each, with the Hup Kaphong Cooperative Community owning the land jointly.
