Thailand and China: Building Stronger Connections

On November 9, on the side of APEC Summit in Beijing, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha met with President Xi Jingping of the People’s Republic of China to discuss Thai-Chinese relations, touching on such topics as infrastructure, agriculture, and trade. Prime Minister Prayut expressed his appreciation to President Xi for China’s strategy towards developing R3A, the road-transport network linking the economic quadrangle of Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, and China. 
 
The Prime Minister also conveyed Thailand’s readiness to cooperate with China in developing the dual-track rail as well as the country’s support for China’s policy to make the Yuan the common currency of Asia, and thanked Beijing for their continued importing of Thailand’s agricultural products. President Xi in turn expressed his desire to help support the development of Thailand’s education, expanding cooperation in science, technology, research, and innovation. 
 
PM Prayut and President Xi at APEC (Xinhua)Both leaders agreed to have further talks to help alleviate obstacles in the bilateral trade of agricultural products. Prime Minister Prayut invited President Xi to attend the Mekong Sub-region Summit, to be held in Thailand between December 19-20.
At the summit, Thailand discussed the issue of human trafficking and pushed for the recognition of the development of transport corridors as economic corridors. Thailand also voiced her strong support for the launch of an FTAAP (Free-Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific). It is anticipated that the APEC meetings will strongly help boost trade cooperation between its member countries.
